All excellent points, Maria. I do wish teachers and editors would stop with absolute prohibitions against the passive voice, which can serve several purposes.

E.g. We don't know the agent: "The body was left where it fell."

The verb communicates the agent: "The news was reported around the world today."

We want to emphasize the experience of the passive subject: "...where afterward, seven hundred Indian horses were rounded up and shot in the head." (Tommy Orange, Wandering Stars)

You avoid an absolute prohibition ("whenever possible"), so kudos. But without examples of its possibilities, only the prohibition is left.

All best to you, and thank you for your excellent piece.
