Amazing. I had the notion that February was a purification from, or by means of, fevers, febris in Latin. But a consultation of my lexicon taught me that the word februum is a Sabine word for expiation or cleansing, perhaps not connected to fever at all. And for a moment I grieved at all the lost languages whose riches are now only compost for the bright flowers that we see and speak.
