As a Latinist I keep telling my students that a computer will never be able to translate Latin...but I know that I'm wrong. Google Translate can already come up with a pretty good baseline translation, which a competent student can buff to the point that I'm unable to detect the original assistance.

The key is that the competent student doesn't really need the original assistance, and the struggling student can't see how the artificial translation betrays its artifice. I still seem to be pretty good at discovery.

I worry what all this means for the teaching and learning of foreign languages, though. My "liberal arts" university is reducing its language requirement and our new provost has openly questioned the need for foreign languages at all. It's a bad trend, as far as I'm concerned.
