Great piece, Chris. I teach about some of the ancient Mediterranean societies, and it's remarkably difficult to understand wealth and poverty in those societies because we view them through our own lens. Having land and having family tended to correspond with "wealth" in the ancient world even if there was little disposable cash.

Another way of reading your story: relationships are wealth!
