I feel a pang of recognition in that description, Bonnie. For what it’s worth, I’ve been “that guy” for much of my life, all too glad to suggest how you should think or feel or what you should do. It’s not just the fact that I’m male or want to be helpful — my Mom is very much the same way, and I’m like her. But it’s a terrible way to be, and it’s acid to relationships. I’m 57 now and just realizing how much closer I can be to others when I listen to them and remain open. And curious. And humble. None of which comes very naturally, but I’m finding that practice helps!
