I hadn't seen that ngram, Mick, but yeah, I had the sense that epitaph was underutilized. It's precise, though: τάφος is Greek for "tomb, grave" so an "epitaph" is written "on the tomb." There's no Latin equivalent as precise. They use titulus (as appears in one of the epitaphs I cite) but that has many meanings, such as "superscription, inscription, label, title, ticket, bill, placard, notice." So I went for precision and hoped for the best!
