I was not aware of this novel before this review, Harry, so I don't know whether Golding invites comparisons to Dante or if this analogy is yours alone, but it's brilliant. Because I find Dante--and just about any version of a katabasis into the underworld--deeply meaningful, I'm inclined to put this on my winter reading list.
