In America now, as you probably know, many cities saw a shrinking in their police force for the same reasons you cite, and now many are experiencing a rise in crime. The pendulum has swung the other way, and many citizens are calling for more police just a few years after the dominant cry was to defund them. It would be lovely to have rational, balanced debates about the best course of action, but just like sensationalism, extremism sells.
