Just about any post mentioning Catullus and Pliny the Elder gets 50 claps from me! Of course, living in the 1st century CE, Pliny probably knew very little about silphium from north Africa, but probably knew the spice asafoetida, which is hing in Indian culture. I'm told a little goes a long way, but the Romans must have loved it.
