Most of the facts reported seem accurate as far as they go, but attributing them to “the Romans” as if they were a single monolithic culture is no more accurate than attributing some practice or characteristic to “Americans” or “Europeans.” To read a Roman examination of his own food culture, for example, see Horace Satires 2.2 (his Satires are titled Sermones in Latin). Plenty of other examples exist.
