My students have no idea that higher education was ever any different, Jill. When I tell them that my tuition at a state school was $800 a semester in the 80s, and that I could earn most of my annual tuition during summers, they are dumbfounded.

That said, I don't know how to deviate from the consumer mentality of higher education right now. Like health care, education is premised on expertise, and the customer does not usually know what's best. But that argument gets no traction now and it's unlikely to.

I'm a weird reformer. I think reforms are needed but I have no idea how to implement any of them!
