Oh Lyle, I'm sorry you had that experience! It sounds uncomfortably similar to mine in its abruptness, though my chancellor did not have to be reminded of the terms of the faculty handbook. I don't think I'll have the option of adjuncting--and I'm not sure I would accept it if offered.

I tried to limit this piece to my experience and leave aside my diatribe against the current corporatization of the university, but I tend to agree with your assessment. There are so many connected issues--funding, tuition costs, debt, cost of living--that the crisis feels systemic and insoluble.

No windmills, got it! I love reading Don Quixote but I don't want to be him.
