Thank you, Gautam. I appreciate your perspective and your support as a computer scientist.
My university was founded as a "public liberal arts university" over 60 years ago, and our current chancellor, for reasons she has chosen not really to explain, has decided to change it. Most of us suspect political influence; she cites "student demand" which is largely untrue. But whatever the reason, the Humanities are being eliminated and downgraded in favor of STEM subjects, and I'm sure our admissions office will soon start advertising the "return on investment" of our degrees.
All this particularly sad to me, not just for the loss of my own job, but because that chancellor will be gone in 5 years or so, and the next one will have no sense of what was destroyed. And so it goes.
Thank you for reading and responding, my friend. I appreciate you.
