That same thing occurred to me, Melissa. They have to throw out hundreds or thousands of lines to get one bite, I assume. How could it possibly be worth it? John Oliver suggested two horrible answers in that linked video: 1) the real "masterminds" behind the scams make a lot of money from the few people who fall for them, and 2) they trick and traffic people who do that daily mind-numbing work for them. It's rude and malicious and abusive--and just another day on the internet/social media.
