This is very kind, Hannah, and I appreciate your hopes and prayers on my behalf.
My situation could be much worse, if my entire school were closing. That is usually the final resort for private schools without much endowment. It can become a fatal spiral: you cut programs hoping to save money, but cutting programs also limits options and makes your school less attractive, and enrollment falls, and you cut more, etc. etc. Since my university is public and part of a state system, I have a different level of protection, and there are procedures for the elimination of departments and programs. I'll have at least one more year of employment, and perhaps two in order to teach classes to allow all our current majors to graduate. If my university choose to keep Latin as a language even though not a major, I may be able to stay beyond that as a member of the Language Department. But that is yet to be determined.
Thank you for referring me to your piece. It's very good and true. Again, I'm fortunate in that I have been able to live out my dream for decades, and I don't want to diminish that. It's dying earlier than I'd hoped, but it's had a good, long life.
Thank you for reading and responding, Hannah. I appreciate you.
