Vergil is an essential intermediary between ancient Greek ideas of the afterlife and Dante's Divine Comedy. In book 6 of the Aeneid, the hero Aeneas descends to the Underworld and encounters different parts that reflect stasis, punishment, and ease. Dante signals this literary dependence by having Vergil guide him through the Inferno and Purgatorio.
