Wonderful piece, and yes, as you say, the awareness of the influence we have is a "rare instance." As one of my most influential professors used to say, teaching is an obscure art. Of course, he had no idea how much he influenced me. His fingerprints are on most of what I do.
But the other wonder for me is the poem "Children Learn What They Live." A small wall-hanging with that poem hung in the kitchen in my childhood home, where I lived until I was 10. I remembered it only vaguely and hadn't thought much about it, and certainly could not have named it. Thank you so much for reintroducing me to something I looked at every day!
