Yes, yes, and yes. The older I get, the more this becomes the only truth.

For me, the point of doing the right thing is not the outcome: it's doing the right thing, period, as far as I understand what's right by my limited lights.

Sure, there's causality in the world. I often get kindness in return for kindness and coldness in return for coldness. But I don't understand those who see the universe as a compensation machine that repays everything in kind. I don't understand them because their lives and their eyes must disprove that nearly every day, don't they?
