You ask the very question that haunts me, Melissa! One 31-year-old runner finished less than a minute before me. Could I have run him down in better socks?? The world will never know!

Actually, I didn't know he was so close until the very end of the race. He was slowing down over the last miles more than I was. If I had known, "bad" socks or no, I would've tried to reel him in.

And that tells something about me that I've never revealed on Medium: I love to beat the younger guys. In triathlon they paint your age on your right calf so that you know your age-group competitors, and it used to give me a tremendous thrill to bike or run past guys 20-30 years younger.

There may be something wrong with me...
