Your response explicitly states the question that many others have implied, David: exactly what is an education for? I suspect that that's why this piece has attracted so much attention, certainly not for me, but for the larger institution and the conversations we generally aren't having about it. And speaking as someone on the inside, I say with confidence that I am not hearing conversations about what an education is for. I see decisions being made based on financial crises and student demand. I hear bromides and clichés and tripe that AI could produce by the truckload. I probably spout more than my fair share of it, and I feel that sometimes. I don't examine myself often enough. I'd probably sentence Socrates to death too if he cornered me and made me define education. I'm sure I'm not alone--most administrators would hand him the hemlock.
